We got lots done this weekend! We officially got the Prius. Niamh had a great time with her walker. Ironically she pooped up her back and that seems to happen most often with the iPoop onsie. I cleaned a bunch and organized so that there are parts of the house that might stay clean. Niamh slept alot and actually played by herself contentedly for fair stretches of time. It was really awesome to be able to be doing stuff and keeping an eye on her and her having fun with her toys. She definitely likes the play scarfs I made, she waves them around and I don’t know what else but they occupy her time. She still does not totally understand most of her music toys, she likes them but the music is almost a happy accident because she steps on them or something and they start to sing. The odd exceptions are her exersauser, in those she purposefully pushes the buttons of the music accessories. Maybe the exersauser is a static environment that she knows well and the other music toys move location… who knows…
Yesterday she was super tired from daycare and slept way to long in her afternoon nap. I read about 200 pages of book 2 in the Twlight series. Hopefully today we are back to normal, but, I really did enjoy the quality time reading on the couch for more then five seconds before 11pm. Book one was good but I concur with others opinions that #1 it reads like a teenage chick flick and #2 every time you expect something to actually happen she decides to do laundry (frustrating). I liked it enough to start the second and #3 and 4 are waiting for me. Depending on my class, that starts next week, I may or may not have time for recreational reading any more.
Since she is still sleeping I’m going to go fritter away more time on reading.
This week was not a totally happy one because two of the 5 were spent in semi-misery due to fever and an ear infection. Those two days obviously coincided with the two days Lars would be on a business trip. It could have been a lot worse really, she was clingy and crabby but slept and ate (ate alot). We got good use out of the sling and one of the days it was 25 degrees out and sunny so we took about a 2 mile walk. I figured the fresh air could not hurt and she got some sunlight and I got some exercise. Nothing like an extra 20lb strapped to your back to make the workout work for you.
This video is from Monday and I have watched it a dozen times since because she loves to see herself laugh and we both needed the lift.
She is now much better with 2 doses of medicine in her. This weekend will be busy, getting a car, cleaning out the old car to sell, trip to costco to get more diapers for her to poop in, finishing shelving and we have the movie Iron Man from netflix. Should be good times.
A fellow daycare mom got there early and got a sweet pic of the kids enjoying a snack. Niamh is in love with snacks to the point where she really won’t eat a real meal anymore. I don’t know why daycare won’t comply with my ever constant request to please feed her a bottle before snacks and not to feed her to sleep. I only ever ask these two things! She comes home starving every day and eats all night to compensate. I’m sure 50% is her, she is too excited by everything to eat well, but I’m not going to put all the blame on her because they feed her snacks every 2 hours. I’m really glad the daycare is close and they do alot with the kids but I truly wish they would honor my schedule requests and not just put her into their routine…
While I did not vote for Obama, I am very impressed by the way this inauguration has been hyped up. The public seems much more aware and involved in the process and that is a good sign for America. I had the good luck to be in the car driving from workplace site one to site two and I heard the oath and first public address. The speech was very well written and well spoken and I truly hope everything he is planning goes as well as this first day. I am part of the doubters referred to, I think he is trying to do too much and I hope he does not spread himself/government too thin and get nothing done. I know the SCA is a microcosm in comparison but it is really difficult to change a big body of law, you can only take baby steps. I did feel very hopeful though, he is a smart guy and will lead the country well and I give him credit for getting so many more people involved and caring about what happens.
So for the record; when Obama was made the 44th president of the US I was driving through Wyoming MN in my minivan listening on MN public radio.
Just in case I forget at some point, here is the list of places I was for major historical events;
9/11/2001 – I was asleep in bed with Pneumonia in Downingtown PA, I had a Dr apt later that morning. Mom called and told me to turn on the TV
The first bombing of Bagdad – I was watching TV with the family in Sayville NY, I was in 5th grade and I called my friend Michelle D right after.
The OJ Simpson verdict – I was in 12th grade Russian class, we were not allowed to go watch it but the class next door was. We were learning how to say we were ‘from’ somewhere.
The Challenger explosion – I was in first grade at St Lawrence, we didn’t see it ‘live’ but Sister Mary came to the class and told the teacher what happened (who did not tell us) and we all stood up and prayed a decade of the rosary. I saw the replay that night on the news.
I do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing that the list is so short. I’m grateful to live in basically peaceful time/place but I’m sure my head in sand policy blocks many historic events that I’m forgetting.
Wow, alot has transpired in the last few days as well as a whole lot of nothing…
First, I suppose I need to admit to a person problem… When something new and different is announced or proposed I am compelled to play out all the possible scenarios in my head to sometimes bad extremes before I can arrive at an opinion of the new thing. The bad extremes also feel very real to me before I can rationalize them out. Anyway, when things like ‘voluntary layoffs’ are announced I have to calculate what severance package I would be eligible for, should I take it, what would that do to the budget, could I or should I get another job etc when in all reality the announcement was just an industry standard and they are not expecting anyone to really take it. So, my picture of the world and my path through it took a major evaluation to circle right back to where I started.
Next, our simple car maintenance trip for new tires uncovered another problem that all totaled up was above the actual value of the car. Lars (who has no sentimentality or every scenario issues) came to the conclusion quickly that we needed to get a new car. By the end of the day I agreed but that was the second day in a row I had to manically rethink all sorts of bits and pieces I thought I had straighted out. We went car shopping on Saturday afternoon and test drove a 2008 Prius and we are 99% sure we will own it by the end of the week. Once a decision is made I’m fine but trying to evaluate things takes me a few hours. I actually got to play the rational one on the car decision; There are tons of ‘cars’ out there and you can spend a month test driving options. We agree that mileage (and safety) is the #1 criteria we are evaluating for this new car since it will be our around town, commuter car. We may or may not take it to events depending on gear because the minivan can’t be beat for space. Lars was sucked in by the zoom zoom ness of some of the other cars but they only got 30mpg max and our van gets 20mpg average so when compared to the Prius 45mpg why go half way just for some extra zip? I moved money on Sunday so we can buy the car any day after Thursday.
Moving on from mentally difficult to pleasant; I went to Ikea with G and had a very good time. I got what I wanted and I can add the desk/office area of Ikea to the list of places I have nursed Niamh. I also got to see her new house and I can see it being the site for many tent workshops in the future. It is a great house with not just a place for everything but a ROOM for everything. I’m not telling Lars that G’s guy has his own game room ;)
Sunday was atleast a non mentally taxing day. We played at home, went grocery shopping, cleaned and I even got a nap.
This week Lars is going on a business trip so I’ll be on my own for two week days, meaning I’ll have to drop Niamh off at daycare (something I have avoided for 6 months). I’m sure it will be fine, I’m just crossing my fingers for no sickness or teething this week.
So, while busy, nothing actually got done of substance
This weekend we finally got ourselves to an event. It feels like forever since the last one and it was so nice to see everyone. Unfortunately Lars was sick with what we thought* was a bad burger and he got there and left within 10 min. Good thing it was local. So Niamh and I had a fun time with a bunch of people and she even got to go to a few vigils with me but found them mellow enough to nap during. I’m not sure I’ve ever been to a vigil that has been rowdy.
Sunday started off well enough, I got a few things done but then I was stricken with whatever disease Lars had! It was pretty bad stomach and head ache and for some reason really bad leg pains too. I got nothing done all day but by 10ish I felt reasonable. Anyway, I don’t want this blog to be a litany of all the day’s I’ve lost to illnesses but I think this winter I’ve been sick more then the last 5 years combined. Probably has something to do with a certain 9 month old who still eats two times a night.
I’m not sure what to do about the night feedings or her increasing resistance to sleeping in her bed for more then 3hours but I hate to let her cry because she starts to wheeze and cough. I also don’t like to let her cry because I only have a few hours a day with her and I don’t want one of them full of her screaming her head off. We started out so well but I think she is just too excited at daycare to eat so she is hungry at night because her night feedings are not just an idle ‘I could eat’ they are full fledged ‘FEED ME SEMORE!’ followed by 15min of eating.
Other then work, sickness, not cleaning the house and playing with the baby the last week has been unremarkable. I’m hopeful this weekend I can get some of the house stuff done, Lars said he and Niamh will go out together. Anyone want them to come visit? Anyone want to come help me do house stuff? I also need to go to Ikea and my Ikea buddy moved to stinky Indiana (it actually does smell) so anyone want to Ikea? I am getting these to go next to the TV and one of these to go above the TV perpendicular to the first set. I’m actually getting this little one too so I will have the floor to ceiling look, I’m not sure if the little one should go on the top or the bottom… This will give all the random stuff in the room a home away from little fingers and the bottom ones will be for toys.
Dinner time – must go – enjoy the new pictures :)
